Guilford Technical Community College Librarian Featured in Educator Spotlight

Michael Rose is a Reference and Instruction Librarian at GTCC’s High Point Campus.

JAMESTOWN, N.C. — Michael Rose, a Reference and Instruction Librarian at GTCC’s High Point Campus, has been featured educator in the World View Educator Spotlight. World View, a public service program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, honors one exceptional educator a month.

Michael was recognized by World View for his commitment to global education. His involvement with World View began when he attended the Fall 2017 Community College Symposium, “Innovation and Technology in a Global Age,” but his interest in global education emerged before that: he began serving on GTCC’s Global Education & Literacy Committee in 2016.

“Each year the committee develops and publicizes events across campuses during International Education Week in November, and a smaller series of events during Spring Semester,” shared Rose. “These events include speakers, film, food, music, and panel discussions. They serve to not only make GTCC students aware of the cultural diversity we enjoy here in central North Carolina but illustrate the connections and commonalities between cultures around the world.”

After being awarded a Curriculum Development Grant from the N.C. Global Distinction Program in 2018, Rose and his colleagues developed a collection of Global Resource materials on Africa and Latin America to support curriculum development for instructors who want to globalize their courses at GTCC using guidelines from World View. The college’s expansion of global education includes 15 Global courses and 19 courses that have been globalized to meet requirements of the Global Distinction Program. GTCC has 83 students currently enrolled in the Global Scholars program, and 13 students who completed all requirements for the Global Scholar of Distinction program in the 2018–2019 academic year.

Rose, who has been at GTCC since 2014, is committed to maintaining the momentum.

“The library will continue to publicize the collection we developed with the help of World View. I plan on continuing my work with the Global Education & Literacy Committee that supports instructors interested in globalizing courses,” he added.
